You don't have to shop there. White House Black Market has great dresses that can be dressed up for work or for going out to dinner. But they're pricey so if you found one you liked, tailoring might be an option. Nice pants that are too long or short can be adjusted. I certainly don't shop at Chico's or J Jill but I get things tailored regularly.
But if your lifestyle doesn't demand that you need a suit or dresses, I can see the "not wanting/needing tailoring" thing. Unfortunately for me, I'm in suits most days and because of other things I do, I regularly need cocktail/gala dresses. My little Russian tailor lady is one of my best friends!
See, I would think a tailor would be great for pants, then! I have a small waist but very large quads/thighs so to get them right in the leg, they're too big in the waist. So I need to get them tailored.
Really, I have a few very nice pieces but for a lot of my stuff like shirts, blouses, tees and tanks, I buy from places like Old Navy (I was teasing earlier) or the junior department at Nordstrom because it's cheaper.
I really hate buying things full price so I shop sales. I will try a bunch of sizes on in store and then go online for better deals.
I'd say for clothes you'll be swapping out as you lose, maybe do that. Try on a bunch in store to get your sizing then search for deals online.
I didn't even know Old navy was considered so crappy. I hadn't been to one in so long. I typically shop at macys. Or random stores in the mall. I look for more sales, like something that was once 60$ now at 25$. It works well when you have a macys card. I have been in like sacs 5th avenue but everything looks so tiny, but they have nice sun glasses and other accessories, but I swear places like that an Neiman Marcus have such tiny clothes. I have to travel to like the bay or cannery row if I want to buy that stuff.
My complaint about Old Navy is that because it's cheap, the sizing can be weird and their stuff can sometimes fall apart or stretch. My cheapo sweaters I buy for horse showing from there get really stretched out after a couple of wearings.
It's not crappy, though, when you're only spending $5 on a tshirt! I'm all for that!
